offGrid NFL - Carolina Panthers to release Baker Mayfield

The Carolina Panthers are set to release quarterback Baker Mayfield, just five months on from trading him.

Per Ian Rapoport, Mayfield is set to hit the waiver wire on Monday, after playing just seven games for the Panthers.

Carolina sent the Cleveland Browns a 2024 fifth-round pick in exchange for Mayfield, who was originally due to receive a fully guaranteed $18.85 million in the final year of his rookie deal. The Browns agreed to pay $10.5 million of the salary.

Mayfield went 1-5 as a starter for Carolina, passing for six touchdowns, six interceptions and amassing 1,313 yards for the team. Injuries and poor form have once again hampered the progress of the former #1 overall pick, and the Panthers will now move forward with Sam Darnold and P.J. Walker.

Mayfield’s next move is unclear, with injury-hit teams like the San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles seemingly early potential destinations. However, this is another blow in what has been a turbulent start to his NFL career, since entering the league in 2018.
