Kliff Kingsbury sacked as Arizona Cardinals head coach
The Arizona Cardinals have fired head coach Kliff Kingsbury just 10 months after signing him to a contract extension through the 2027 season.
It follows a dismal 2022 season where the Cardinals won just four games, ending in a 38-13 thrashing by divisional rivals the San Francisco 49ers. Kingsbury has had problems to deal with, coaching a team without DeAndre Hopkins for the first six games, Kyler Murray for the last five games, tight end Zach Ertz for the last seven and the majority of the starting offensive linemen for stretches the year.
Kingsbury, hired in January 2019, had been seen as an up-and-coming talent for the Cardinals, notably leading Arizona to an unbeaten 7-0 start during the 2021 season. However, they’ve won just eight of their last 27 games since then and Kingsbury’s departure in Arizona now comes as no surprise.
The Cardinals have also announced that general manager Steve Keim has decided to “step away from his position in order to focus on his health.”
The team will now be conducting an extensive search to fill both positions.
