Lions stun Chiefs to win 2023 NFL season opener
The Detroit Lions showed their grit by overturning a six-point deficit to beat Super Bowl champions the Kansas City Chiefs 21-20 in the 2023 NFL season opener at Arrowhead Stadium.
The two teams were level at 14-14 late in the third quarter, before Harrison Butker kicked two field goals to put the Chiefs 20-14 ahead in the fourth.
But David Montgomery’s touchdown edged the Lions in front, and Patrick Mahomes and co. were unable to find an answer in return.
The victory the Lions’ first win over the Chiefs since their record-breaking performance back in 2011, and means for the second season in succession, the Super Bowl champions have lost on opening day.
Detroit’s rookie class stood out, with utility back Jahmyr Gibbs looking the pick of the bunch, and tight end Sam LaPorta and linebacker Jack Campbell also impressive.
Safety Brian Branch, taken in the second round this year, got an incredible debut score with a pick-six off Patrick Mahomes’ throw to Kadarius Toney in the third quarter.
The Lions return to Detroit next week with a clash against the improving Seattle Seahawks, while the Chiefs will be looking to bounce back against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
