Is Brock Purdy now the MVP front runner?
This year’s MVP conversation has been unlike no other in recent memory. No one has really grasped the award and dominated the chat, while players from outside of the quarterback position have stepped forward to make a claim.
But one unexpected superstar has been a surprise inclusion in the conversation throughout the debate, and after a dominate display is probably the favourite for the accolade as we head further down the stretch.
Not long ago, we were discussing whether San Francisco 49ers QB Brock Purdy was a legitimate starting quarterback. And now, we placing him firmly in the mix as a legitimate MVP candidate.
When Philadelphia Eagles edge rusher Haason Reddick sacked Purdy on the second snap of Sunday’s blockbuster game between two of the NFL’s heavyweight teams, it felt like it might be a repeat of the NFC Championship Game of last season. But the 49ers bounced back to run the Eagles, their biggest conference rivals, off their own park in a brutal 42-19 victory, with Purdy once again the star of the show.
Purdy threw for 314 yards and four touchdown passes, zero interceptions and a 148.8 passer rating in the game, and while he does benefit from the sublime talent around him, he himself has stood up as a leader in this side. Hurts has talent around him, so does Dak Prescott; so why shouldn’t Purdy be included in the debate, considering he’s beaten both quarterbacks in convincing fashion?
The 49ers play the Seahawks (home), Cardinals (away), Ravens (home), Commanders (away), and Rams (home) to close out the season. Baltimore is the obviously toughest game left, but San Francisco have already shown this year that they can beat the good teams convincingly.
A lot of the success has to be accredited to Purdy’s playing ability, and his MVP case is just as good as anyone’s right now.
