Jerod Mayo hired as Bill Belichick’s successor and head coach of the New England Patriots

A day after parting ways with Bill Belichick, the New England Patriots are expected to hire Jerod Mayo as their next head coach.

Mayo, who served on Belichick’s coaching staff as the inside linebackers coach, will be formally introduced at a press conference next week, where he will become the youngest head coach currently working in the NFL at 37 years of age.

Reports revealed that it was written into Mayo’s contract that he would be the successor to Belichick, despite heavy rumours that Mike Vrabel was the leading candidate after he was fired by the Tennessee Titans earlier this week.

Mayo himself was a lifelong Patriots player – having been drafted with the tenth overall pick in the first round of the 2008 NFL Draft. He led the league in tackles in 2010 and was named to his only All-Pro team and his first of two Pro Bowl teams that season, and won Super Bowl XLIX in 2014.
