Could Aaron Donald really walk away from the NFL?

What can be said about Aaron Donald that hasn’t already been said?

While researching one of the greatest defensive talents in NFL history, one quote stood out more than any other I came across. Sam Monson of Pro Football Focus said, “no matter how good you think Aaron Donald is, you’re probably underselling it.”

Football fans have been able to witness one of the greatest defensive players of all time wreak havoc on offensive lines since Donald entered the NFL in 2014.

It was clear from the moment he became pro that Donald was a force to be reckoned with.

He was named the Defensive Rookie of the Year in his opening season, as well as a selection for the Pro-Bowl.

From then, Donald would go on to rack up 98 sacks, 285 solo tackles, and 150 tackles for loss to date.

“Singularity the greatest non-QB talent in the NFL. He wrecks games”, described analyst Peter Schrager.

Why would Donald retire?

The NFL world has its eyes transfixed on Aaron Donald and the Los Angeles Rams. Donald himself has admitted that he could retire from football if an extension cannot be negotiated with the team, which has sent shockwaves around the league.

After winning the Super Bowl in 2022, rumors of Donald’s retirement began to swirl. The star defensive tackle had previously stated that playing eight years in the NFL was his goal, however, Donald decided to return in 2023.

On the “I Am Athlete” podcast, Donald stated that his return to the Rams in 2023 would happen if the team and Donald can come to terms on a new deal.

“I was blessed to play this game, to make the money I made, the accomplishments I made in eight years is, like, I’m complete. If I can win another one, that’s great. But if not, I’m at peace,” he said.

Donald went on to reveal that they will “probably” work out a deal, but if not, he won’t walk away “mad”.

One of the all-time greats

If Donald were to retire today, it would draw an end to his 8-year Hall of Fame career.

His list of accomplishments includes a Super Bowl championship with the Rams, 3x NFL Defensive Player of the Year Awards, 8x Pro Bowler, and 7x First-team All-Pro. The laundry list of career achievements has made sure Donald is in the conversation for the greatest defensive player of all time.

All signs are pointing to an Aaron Donald return. But in professional sports, you never know what can happen.

Whether we see him in Los Angeles, you can be sure to visit him in Canton when his time comes to enter the Hall of Fame.

For now, just enjoy watching a G.O.A.T. dressed as a Ram.
