Dolphins release Tua at record cost as Atlanta move looms

The Miami Dolphins are set to part ways with quarterback Tua Tagovailoa in a major off-season decision that signals a new direction for the franchise.
Miami plan to release Tagovailoa when the NFL’s new league year begins and is expected to carry a significant financial impact of around $99.2m, meaning the Dolphins will absorb the largest dead-cap hit in league history.
Tagovailoa, 27, was selected fifth overall in the 2020 NFL Draft and has been Miami’s starting quarterback for much of the past six seasons. During his time with the Dolphins he produced several impressive campaigns, including leading the NFL in passer rating in 2022 and passing yards in 2023, while also earning Pro Bowl honours.
However, injuries and inconsistent team performances in recent seasons have raised questions about his long-term future in Miami. The Dolphins missed the play-offs in 2025, and Tagovailoa ended the campaign with 2,660 passing yards, 20 touchdowns and 15 interceptions while posting a 6–8 record as a starter.
Falcons move agreed, Willis to take over in Miami
Tagovailoa has already found a new home after agreeing a one-year deal with the Atlanta Falcons.
Atlanta moved quickly to bring in the experienced quarterback as they look to strengthen their offence heading into the 2026 season. Tagovailoa’s accuracy and quick release are expected to provide stability under centre as the Falcons attempt to push back into play-off contention.
With Tagovailoa set to depart, the Dolphins are expected to turn to Malik Willis as their starting quarterback for the upcoming season.
Willis is anticipated to lead the offence as Miami begin a new chapter following a difficult 2025 campaign.
End of a chapter
Tagovailoa’s departure would mark the end of one of the more eventful quarterback eras in recent Dolphins history. While his time in Miami included moments of elite play, it was also shaped by injuries and inconsistency.
For the Dolphins, the move represents a reset as the organisation looks towards the future. For Tagovailoa, a potential move to Atlanta could provide a fresh start as he begins the next stage of his NFL career.
