NFL free agency frenzy 2026: Opening day deals reshape the league

The NFL’s free-agency negotiating window opened with immediate fireworks as teams across the league rushed to secure top talent. Big-money contracts, aggressive trades and surprise roster moves defined the opening wave, with several franchises reshaping key positions on both sides of the ball.
Here’s a breakdown of the biggest moves from a frantic first day.
Blockbuster signings
Several headline deals dominated the early hours of the market, particularly at wide receiver, along the offensive line, and at edge rusher.
The most lucrative defensive signing came when the Carolina Panthers landed pass rusher Jaelan Phillips on a four-year, $120 million deal that includes $80 million guaranteed. The former first-round pick gives Carolina a much-needed boost to its pass rush after finishing near the bottom of the league in sacks.
At wide receiver, the San Francisco 49ers added veteran star Mike Evans on a three-year contract, giving quarterback Brock Purdy a reliable deep threat and red-zone target.
Meanwhile, the Las Vegas Raiders made one of the biggest trench investments of the day, signing All-Pro center Tyler Linderbaum to a three-year, $81 million contract to anchor their offensive line.
The Kansas City Chiefs also made a notable offensive addition, signing running back Kenneth Walker III to a three-year deal worth roughly $43 million to strengthen their backfield.
Other notable signings included:
- Wan’Dale Robinson — four years with the Tennessee Titans
- Travis Etienne — joins the New Orleans Saints
- Dee Alford — signs with the Buffalo Bills
- Reed Blankenship — signs with the Houston Texans
- Austin Hooper — one-year deal with the Atlanta Falcons
Major trades shake up rosters
Several teams also opted to reshape their rosters through trades rather than free-agent contracts.
The Pittsburgh Steelers made one of the biggest offensive moves by acquiring wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. from the Indianapolis Colts.
Another notable receiver move saw the Buffalo Bills acquire star wideout DJ Moore from the Chicago Bears as Buffalo looks to further support quarterback Josh Allen.
On defense over the weekend, the Baltimore Ravens landed elite pass rusher Maxx Crosby from the Las Vegas Raiders, while the Dallas Cowboys traded for defensive lineman Rashan Gary.
The New York Jets also upgraded their secondary by acquiring safety Minkah Fitzpatrick and immediately signing him to a contract extension.
Notable re-signings
Several franchises prioritized keeping key veterans rather than letting them test the market.
- Khalil Mack — returns to the Los Angeles Chargers
- Travis Kelce — signs a one-year extension with the Kansas City Chiefs
- Rashid Shaheed — new deal with the Seattle Seahawks
Top remaining free agents
Despite the early flurry of deals, several high-profile players remain available as teams continue negotiating.
Among the top names still on the market:
- Trey Hendrickson
- Devin Lloyd
- Kyler Murray
- Kirk Cousins
- Geno Smith
- George Pickens
- David Njoku
Veteran defenders including Bradley Chubb and Cam Jordan are also still available.
What is yet to come
With the initial negotiating period underway, more deals and trades are expected before contracts can officially be signed at the start of the new league year.
Historically, the first wave of free agency brings the biggest contracts, while the following days often produce value signings and veteran additions. Several contenders that remained quiet on day one could soon enter the market as they look to round out their rosters.
If the opening day frenzy is any indication, the NFL offseason is already off to a dramatic start.
