What should Green Bay do with Aaron Rodgers?

Another year, another offseason of Aaron Rodgers’ future being a focal point of the Green Bay Packers concerns. Like in 2022, fans don’t have a clue what will happen with the team and their quarterback situation.

Rodgers is being heavily linked with a move away, like he was last year, which could see the Packers start a new quarterback in 2023. Green Bay have Jordan Love under contract, but could also make a move for a more experience QB if Rodgers was to leave.

The Packers have been in this situation before with Aaron Rodgers, except Rodgers was in the shoes of Love as he took over from Brett Favre. So what should the Packers do?

Taken at pick number 26 in the first round of the 2020 NFL draft, Love has gone on to play in 10 regular season games, with very few snaps involved. The only times he has started a full game was in 2021 against the Kansas City Chiefs and the Detroit Lions.

Packers’ fans are eager to see him play more than five snaps, they want to know what their future is going to look like. Aaron Rodgers is getting older, and we don’t know how much longer he really has left. Love has spoken out stating that he does not want to sit another season, and believes he’s ready to go.

After a decent cameo game against Philadelphia in 2022, it is understandable why he and Packers fans should believe it. He has sat behind perhaps the greatest quarterback of all time and has learned the ways of the game.

When it comes to Aaron Rodgers it gets confusing, he doesn’t want to play anywhere else but at the same time the Packers might have to trade him. The Packers are trying to work out other contracts so that they can pay Aaron Rodgers the big contract he signed last year.

If the Packers keep Aaron Rodgers, he will have a $68 Million hit against the cap, which means the Packers have a lot of restructuring to do. They have already started with the restructuring of Aaron Jones, Jaire Alexander and Preston Smith deals, but, even with the less cap hit from other players, it may not be enough to save the Packers for future years after Rodgers.

In my opinion, even with Aaron Rodgers still feeling like he could play for another few seasons, the Packers should trade him away, particularly if they can get a handful of premium draft picks to start building around Jordan Love.

As much as Packers fans love him and can’t thank him enough for his achievements, the team is at a critical juncture after missing the playoffs in 2022. Clearly, this roster has regressed and is in need of a slight rebuild. A trade for Rodgers would give them the assets to make the changes they need to get back into the postseason.

We’re a month away from the NFL Draft and the Packers organization is going to have to make one of its biggest decisions ever. Rodgers is out of his darkness retreat, and a decision on his future is coming very soon.
