Will Carson Wentz play in the NFL in 2023? Three possible landing spots

Another year, and another team moves on from the struggling Carson Wentz.

Less than 12 months on from acquiring Wentz from the Colts, the Commanders made the decision to cut him after a poor season in 2022. From a financial standpoint, this move was a no-brainer as Washington will now pick up $26.17 million in salary cap space.

For Wentz, time seems to be running on his career as an NFL starting quarterback. But with many teams having problems at the QB position, the former #2 overall pick from 2016 could yet remain in the league.

Here are three possible destinations for Wentz in 2023:

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

A team in desperate need of a QB for 2023, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers could make a move for Wentz, with little alternatives currently available to them.

Tom Brady’s second retirement leaves the inexperienced Kyle Trask currently under center. And with just the 19th overall pick in the NFL draft, and the worst salary cap space in the league, there are few alternatives that Tampa Bay can realistically make.

A team short on money, Wentz would probably need to take a big pay cut from his previous couple of jobs. But, with time running out on his career and opportunities running thin, this could be a last chance saloon for him. With Tampa Bay still clinging on to a window of contention, Wentz could even return to from with a solid supporting cast as a Buccaneer.

Arizona Cardinals

A move to Arizona would give Wentz another shot at being a starter, albeit for a short period. With Kyler Murray out early in the season with a knee injury, Wentz would be in contention to slot straight in at quarterback. He would have to beat out another former Washington quarterback in Colt McCoy for the job, but with he himself susceptible to an injury, there may be little competition.

It might be short-term, but an opportunity with the Cardinals could be where Wentz reminds the league that he is still capable of being a solid NFL quarterback.

Kansas City Chiefs

After Chad Henne retired, the Chiefs will be shopping for a new backup QB this offseason. This could make way for Wentz to become the latest veteran to slide in behind Patrick Mahomes as insurance, which has proven to be a necessity for K.C. in recent years.

It would mean the end to Wentz’s career as a starter. But it is a move to the best team in football in Kansas City, and a chance to add to his trophy cabinet, which could be the ideal scenario for Wentz.
