Jimmy Garoppolo: The highest paid backup QB in the NFL

Money heals all wounds it seems, as quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo stays with the San Francisco 49ers for a reworked one-year-contract. The deal is worth $6.5 million, fully guaranteed with incentives that can reach up to $16 million.

The extension also includes a no-trade clause and a no-franchise tag option, giving Garoppolo complete freedom to sign with any NFL franchise in the upcoming offseason leading into the 2023-2024 NFL season.

Originally, Jimmy Garoppolo was in line to be cut from the squad due to little to no interest from the league in a possible trade. It also followed a great preseason from presumed starting QB Trey Lance.

But it’s been recently reported that the 49ers didn’t feel comfortable with their backup options at QB behind Lance.

Jimmy G has a very solid win-loss record of 31-14 as San Francisco’s starting quarterback. I’m sure he’s happy to stay in the Golden State of California as their quarterback, even if it’s a role.
