Cardinals appoint Eagles DC Jonathan Gannon as head coach
The Arizona Cardinals have hired Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon as their next head coach.
Gannon replaces Kliff Kingsbury, who was sacked in January following the Cardinals’ 4-13 2022 campaign, and has signed a five-year contract in Arizona.
Gannon and the Eagles lost to the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVII, but the defensive coordinator led the team to an NFL leading 70 sacks during the regular season, collecting eight more in three playoff games. Gannon’s unit gave up the second-fewest yards in the NFL last season, ranking seventh in points allowed.
Cardinals owner Michael Bidwill announced prior to Super Bowl LVII that the franchise had paused its head coaching search until after the game. They wasted no time after its conclusion in naming Gannon to be the franchise’s next leader.
The Cardinals also hired a new General Manager in Monti Ossenfort last month, so it should be an offseason with a lot of change as the team waits for quarterback Kyler Murray to recover from a torn ACL.
For the Eagles, they lose both coordinators on the same day, after offensive coordinator Shaun Steichen was appointed the new head coach of the Indianapolis Colts.
