Dolphins impress in preseason

Dolphins fans have much to look forward to as we head towards week one of the regular season.

In their final preseason game, Miami dominated and showed some extremely positive signs against the Eagles.

The rout began with an absolute bomb from Tua to Tyreek on the first play from scrimmage.

If you weren’t a believer in the Tua-Tyreek connection before, you may have to reconsider your stance. After the bomb, Tua hit River Cracraft for an 8-yard touchdown pass to give the Dolphins an early 7-0 lead. Fortunately for the Dolphins, the defense wanted to be a part of the action, forcing a three and out on the Eagles first possession. Which then resulted in a 55-yard field goal from Jason Sanders.

The Miami defense was just getting started, terrorizing the Eagles offense and forcing another three and out. On offense, Sony Michel ran it in for a one-yard score to give the Dolphins a 17-0 lead. Elijah Campell then read Reid Sinnett’s pass perfectly and returned an interception for a touchdown, increasing the Dolphins lead even more. The Dolphins defense managed to hold Eagles to zero points in the first half.

The second half of the game was the Skylar Thompson show. Thompson started his dissection of the Eagles defense with a 6-yard touchdown pass to Hunter Long. Thompson wanted to continue spreading the wealth, hitting Cethan Carter for a 4-yard score.

When the game was well over, Thompson decided to end the night at Hard Rock Stadium with a bang, throwing a short pass to Lynn Bowden Jr. for a 39-yard score.

Have the Dolphins found a gem in Skylar Thompson?

The answer to that is, 100% they did. The 7th-round pick from Kansas State has been showing great signs this whole preseason but this game takes the cake. In the second half, Thompson was putting on an absolute clinic. He was making the right reads, stayed patient in the pocket, and quite frankly never looked rattled. With the way, he played you might’ve thought he was the starter. He finished with three touchdowns on 103 yards and a whopping 142.9 QB rating. The backup quarterback battle will be something to keep an eye on.

Takeaways from preseason

To start off, it is clear that the Dolphins can play defense regardless if they were playing against third-stringers or not. This whole off-season has been focused on the Dolphins electric offense but the defense showcased that they need to be a part of the conversation as well, after all, defense wins championships.

Tua and the Dolphins offense are as advertised, one of the most electric teams in the league and I’m not just saying that because of the big play between Tua and Tyreek. It is evident that the rest of the offense is just as explosive. Whether that be through other receivers or even in the backfield. The Dolphins have weapons everywhere on their offense and it shows.

The Dolphins take on the Patriots in week one and I expect it to be a good one. With the number of weapons on both sides of the ball and the connection between Tua and Tyreek growing each day. Do not be surprised if you see the Dolphins come out on top… Phins up!
