Five questions for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2023

Before I start this article, my thoughts and prayers continue to go out to the Kansas City Chiefs organization and the entire Hunt family on the passing of Norma Hunt. I strongly recommend you read Bob Moore’s piece on Norma Hunt which is posted on the Kansas City Chiefs website as it is a great read on her importance to the NFL and Chiefs organizations. Rest In Peace, Norma Hunt.

The Kansas City Chiefs yet again added to their dynasty during the Patrick Mahomes era by winning Super Bowl 57 against the Philadelphia Eagles 38-35. However it is now time to focus on the next season after yet another successful season by the team. There are still questions regarding the Kansas City Chiefs and I am going to give my ‘Top 5’ questions with the team.

5. Are the Chiefs nearing the end with Clyde Edwards-Helaire?

I’ve got to say, while the Chiefs offense was spectacular last season the biggest disappointment once again was with RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire. Ever since his rookie season where he showed some promise, it has been downhill from there. It mainly has to do with injuries, but even when healthy he has not been the most productive. It also does not help with the emergence of Isaiah Pacheco; it really has lowered Edwards-Helaire’s value.

Many also forget that Edwards-Helaire was a healthy scratch when Super Bowl 57 happened.

The telling thing when I heard that is the Chiefs activated Ronald Jones over him in that game. Keep in mind Ronald Jones during the season requested his release from the Chiefs and was barely used. They activated him over Edwards Helaire.

When looking at next season, it is clear that the Chiefs prefer Jerick McKinnon and Isiah Pacheco over him. With the Chiefs declining Edwards-Helaire’s fifth-year option I wonder if the end is near with Edwards-Helaire as a Chiefs. There is only one way to find out, but if I am an owner of Edwards-Helaire in Dynasty Leagues, it is time to panic.

4. Who will stand out at wide receiver in 2023?

The Chiefs currently have the best quarterback in the NFL today and it is not even a debate. The most impressive part is excluding Travis Kelce – he does not have a true number one wide receiver on the team. I don’t think the Chiefs truly need it, but I wonder who from the bunch will stand out and maybe be labeled as the number one receiver.

Marquez Valdes-Scantling is the favorite, but I don’t think he is a true number 1 receiver. Kadarius Toney is an example of how coaching can really help a player in the NFL with how he is utilized. But again I see him fitting more as a number two or three receiver and even as a rotational special teamer.

Rashee Rice the Chiefs used a second round pick on him and if he can develop, Rice could be a player on offense. Skyy Moore was kind of a disappointment last season, but did pretty well in Super Bowl LVII. Maybe with another year of development he could be more consistent.

Richie James has a career year with the New York Giants and hopefully he can replicate that with the Chiefs. Justyn Ross, you can’t rule out as he is getting a lot of hype in training camp. Also I once labeled this guy as a 1st round prospect before the neck injury and I can see a scenario where he stands out.

You can’t rule out any other receiver currently a free agent who probably will want to ring chase for this team (We will get to that)

Did the Chiefs do enough to replace both Orlando Brown and Andrew Wylie?

In my opinion, the offensive line is the most important position on the offense not named Quarterback. That is why when a team does a rebuild I always say Step one is to build the offensive line as they are a great investment to protect the quarterback. Which is why I got nervous when both Andrew Wyile and Orlando Brown left the team as both were very good tackles.

The Chiefs did sign Jawaan Taylor and Donavan Smith who should pan out if they don’t get injured, but besides that and drafting Wanya Morris, the Chiefs did not do much to add depth wise at tackle.

2. Who will ring chase with this team?

Gosh this was a tough one to get as many questions on what I believe is hands down the best team in the NFL. So I wonder, with the Chiefs the favorite to represent the AFC in the Super Bowl and even coming off winning one, which athlete will come to ring chase with the team. I mean I always see it with teams like the chiefs where teams will sign talented players on cheaper deals and the main reason why is so they can get a Super Bowl ring. There are so many veterans this team could recruit, but I wonder not only ‘How Many?’, but who will ring chase with this squad.

1. Can the Chiefs yet again represent the AFC in the Super Bowl?

I asked this question when talking about the Philadelphia Eagles, I am going to do the same thing with the Kansas City Chiefs. Mainly because it was super hard to come up with five questions with this team like it was with the Eagles. The Chiefs have the tools to yet again succeed for another season and continue their dynasty with Mahomes as the QB. But can they produce yet again and represent the AFC in the Super Bowl with growing competition in the AFC.

The Chiefs remain the clear favorite in the AFC East division with the many question marks in Denver, the Raiders trying to copycat the Patriots when it never works unless you have Tom Brady as the QB, and the Chargers making the bizarre decision to keep Brandon Staley as their head coach. When it comes to the Chiefs success, there is only one way to find out when the season begins.

So those are the 5 questions I had regarding the Kansas City Chiefs. Do you agree? Let me know in the comment sections and if you had a question regarding the Kansas City Chiefs for the 2023 season.
