It has come full circle for Zach Wilson.

As ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Mike White would be out for Week 15 on medical grounds, paving way for the 2021 #2 overall pick to return as the starting quarterback for the New York Jets when they take on the Detroit Lions on Sunday.

Wilson, inactive for the previous three games, was benched following a poor run of form, ending with a disastrous 10-3 defeat to the New England Patriots.

White, injured in the defeat to the Buffalo Bills, had told reporters that there was “no doubt” he would play against the Lions, but unfortunately it wasn’t meant to be.

The return of Wilson, whose future in New York is very much in the balance, is met with some pessimism, particularly given the recent change in offensive form.

Blow to New York’s playoff ambitions?

Wilson’s inconsistency in accuracy and ability to move the football, as well as failing to take accountability after the Patriots loss, has shattered his reputation with the Gang Green faithful. Head coach Robert Saleh felt that Wilson needed time on the bench to get his mind straight.

To add to Wilson’s hurt, since he has been out of the starting position, the Jets have seen their best quarterback play of the season.

White led the team to a stunning victory over the Chicago Bears, and has thrown for over 300 yards in two of his three starts this season.

Many will see his injury as a blow for the Jets’ season. Their roster, particularly the defense, has shown to be definite playoff material. But without decent play from their QB, that talent has suffered as a result.

All comes down to this

Let’s face it. Zach Wilson’s in New York is uncertain at best. And as a Wilson supporter, I’ve struggled to feel optimistic about whether he is the right man to lead this team in the future.

Of course, all Jets want us to succeed. It’s a real shame that when the Jets finally see some consistency from their QB in Mike White. I expect the return of Wilson will be taken with a pinch of salt for many.

But I’m absolutely rooting for him on Sunday. This is a golden, and probably last, opportunity for Zach to prove to everyone that he is the franchise quarterback for the New York Jets.

This stretch for Wilson (if White remains out for another week) will determine what the Jets do in the offseason. I’ll be disappointed if we miss out on the playoffs, but if this proves that Wilson isn’t the guy, then so be it.

This is make or break. Wilson must take his chance against the Lions and prove that he is a credible NFL quarterback.
