The San Francisco 49ers have made star edge rusher Nick Bosa the highest paid defensive player in NFL history after agreeing a five-year, $170 million contract extension on Wednesday.

The announcement comes after months of speculation, which include a holdout in recent weeks, that Bosa was due to get paid this offseason, and the deal eclipses the previous highest defensive contract, which was the LA Rams‘ Aaron Donald’s £31.66 million annual salary.

Bosa, drafted second overall in the 2019 NFL Draft, is coming off an outstanding 2022 where he won the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year Award, having registered 51 tackles, 19 for loss, a league-leading 18.5 sacks, 48 quarterback hits and two forced fumbles.

He’s the integral part of the 49ers No.1 defense in the league, and he’ll be looking to add even more honours to his resume this season. San Francisco have a lot to prove with Brock Purdy now under centre, but with Bosa sticking around, no doubt they’ll be contending for a championship yet again in 2023.
