Vikings Release Former All-Pro Eric Kendricks

The Minnesota Vikings have released veteran middle linebacker Eric Kendricks in a cap saving move.

Kendricks, 31, has been a staple of the Vikings defence since he was drafted in the 2nd round out of UCLA back in 2015. The LB played 117 games during his time with the Vikings and had become a real fan favourite. During this time he racked up 857 tackles, 15 sacks, and 9 interceptions.

One of his most memorable moments came during the 2022 season in a thriller against the Bills:

Vikings GM Kwesi Adofo-Mensah had to make a move as the Vikings were well over the cap space. Unfortunately for Vikings fans, Kendricks was the casualty for the cap saving move. The move saves $9.5 million, and the front office must have thought the production no longer matches the value. The Vikings defence struggled throughout all of 2022, and it was clear that change was needed heading into the new season. However, Kendricks is still a valuable player and will likely find a new team with ease during free agency.

The likely replacement for Kendricks will be young LB Brian Asamoah, who just completed his rookie campaign. Asamoah showed flashes last season on minimal chances, he will have more opportunities as a potential starter in 2023. The Vikings could also turn to free agency or look for a new LB in the draft.

This will not be the only big move the Vikings make this off-season, as cap space is still an issue. Rumours have been circulating about Adam Thielen possibly leaving, this is due to his role diminishing and having a cap hit of almost $20 million. If Thielen leaves then Vikings fans will be hurt, but they must place their trust in Adofo-Mensah.

This move is just the first of many of what will likely be a rollercoaster off-season in Minnesota. Without a clear direction to head in it is unknown what further transactions we will see the Vikings make.
