Former NFL QB Ryan Mallett dies aged 35
Former NFL quarterback Ryan Mallett, who played for the New England Patriots, Houston Texans and Baltimore Ravens during a six-year playing career, has tragically died from drowning at the age of just 35.
Mallett, a former third-round pick, was on holiday with his girlfriend in Florida when he died. Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office said Mallett was one of a group of people reportedly struggling offshore in the coastal town of Destin when he went under the water, and lifesaving measures were unsuccessful.
In a statement, the Patriots, who drafted Mallett, said they “are deeply saddened to learn of the sudden and unexpected passing of former quarterback Ryan Mallett. Our thoughts are with the Mallett family, his former teammates and all who are mourning his loss.”
Across his NFL career, Mallett played in 21 games, going 3-5 as a starter and compiling 1,835 passing yards, nine touchdown passes and 10 interceptions. His most notable moment as a pro came with his first career TD pass while at the Texans, which was memorably caught by star defensive end J.J. Watt for a 2-yard score.
May he rest in peace.
