XFL Day 2: Battlehawks stun Brahmas, Defenders spoil Josh Gordon starring
After a wild opening night of XFL football, day two shined in its own right.
The St Louis Battlehawks overcame a 12-point deficit to defeat the San Antonio Brahmas, with AJ McCarron leading the Battlehawks to three scoring drives; one ending in a field goal, one resulting in a touchdown and a 3-point conversion, and a final touchdown to give the Battlehawks the win.
McCarron completed 18 of 26 passes attempted for 190 yards; with the final score 18-15.
The Brahmas showed complete dominance over the Battlehawks for the whole game, but with just 1:42 left on the clock and down by, 12 McCarron threw a laser to Marcell Ateman for an amazing reception, before connecting with Hakeem Butler for a touchdown, making the score 15-9.
McCarron would then complete the first 3-point conversion of the season, below electing for the onside kick rule and converting a 4th and 15 attempt, before going on to score the game sealing touchdown. A huge 18-15 win for the Battlehawks.
Onto the much anticipated game of the week, fans wondered if former star NFL receiver Josh Gordon would play like he never lost time. With the Seattle Sea Dragons starting off strong, it looked like they were going to down the Defenders with ease.
Sea Dragons quarterback Ben DiNucci scrambled outside of the pocket and shuffle passed it to ex NFL receiver Josh Gordon for a touchdown. However, the Defenders started to get in rhythm and would eventually win the game 22-18.
The Defenders didn’t seem to have an answer until the second half, and DiNucuci went on to throw a pick six in the third quarter, which changed the whole momentum of the game.
The Defenders’ backup quarterback Deriq King helped the team substantially, and rushed in for the game leading touchdown which eventually sealed the game up for the Defenders. Their defense held up the game for them not allowing the Sea Dragons to get back into a rhythm, leaving the final score to be 22-18.
The DC Defenders will be facing off against the winless Vegas Vipers this Saturday night, while the Seattle Dragons will play in their first home game against the undefeated St Louis Battlehawks this Thursday night.
