Why the Atlanta Falcons should go all out for Lamar Jackson
It has been an interesting offseason so far for the Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson.
He is yet to reach an agreement on his contract, which leaves him with the option to leave the Ravens at the end of the season. Currently, there are a lot of teams in the league looking for a new quarterback, who can take their teams over the edge, and who better than a former MVP winner.
For me, if Jackson were to leave, the best move for him would be to go to the Atlanta Falcons. In this article, I will layout the reasons why this is a combination to be reckoned with:
Proven winner who needs a bit of luck
Jackson is a former MVP winner who was having a great season in 2022, up until his injury in week 13. He was on track for a more than 3,000 passing yards season.
Yet, despite the relative success before the injury, there was a lot of tension between Jackson and the Ravens going into the back end of the year, with the evidence in seemingly not wanting to get back for the Ravens playoff game against the Cincinnati Bengals.
Jackson has been a major key to the Ravens’ success over the years and it will be interesting to see how much Baltimore’s offense would drop off. Yet, it is important to note that the team’s offensive scheme has built around Jackson’s ability to run with the football. The hiring of Todd Monken suggests a different approach, and it will be interesting to see what Jackson will look like in a different offensive scheme if he were to stay.
But the Ravens still haven’t done a good enough job at getting the weapons around him, surprising considering Jackson is still on his rookie contract. The team has the money to go out and get some playmakers for Jackson, even if they aren’t willing to back him with a deal of his own.
Why a move away would be good for Lamar
The animosity in Baltimore and lack of weapons on the roster is a primary reason why Jackson himself might be looking for a new team next season. And Atlanta must be a team fairly high on his list.
The Falcons have a decent number of key players in the skill positions who could be in place for a number of year, including tight end Kyle Pitts, wide receivers Drake London and Damiere Byrd, and one of the best offensive lines in football. They also have a strong running game with rookie running back Tyler Allgeier is emerging as a real talent.
Atlanta also have an offensive scheme that suits quarterback with a strong rushing ability. Marcus Mariota and Desmond Ridder played quarterback this past season and they are known for having some skills when it comes to running the football.
If Jackson moves to the Falcons, it could be a recipe for long-term success, particularly in developing his passing game with the targets available on offense.
This move would be the best for both parties as it’s a perfect fit for the teams. Not only, but pushes the Falcons back into contention for the biggest prize in football.
